DISCOTEQUE TICKETCLUB

University Final Major Project

Discoteque Ticketclub is a social value ticketing platform designed to make live music more accessible while supporting grassroots venues and artists. Rising ticket prices and the cost of living crisis have made it harder for audiences to attend gigs, while many local venues struggle to sell enough tickets to stay sustainable.

DTTC addresses this by offering a dynamic ticketing platform where promoters can discount unsold tickets and promote events directly to local audiences. Users can discover gigs based on their musical preferences, receive notifications for nearby events, and earn rewards for attending shows.

The Problem

Live music in the UK is becoming increasingly difficult to sustain at a grassroots level. Many local gigs struggle to sell enough tickets to break even, leaving promoters and venues at financial risk. At the same time, audiences are often priced out of events or simply unaware that local gigs are happening.

This creates a cycle where fewer people attend gigs, venues lose revenue, and opportunities for emerging artists become more limited. The challenge was to design a service that could make live music more affordable while helping venues fill empty spaces and sustain local music communities.

Research and Insights

To understand the challenges facing live music events, I conducted research through interviews, personal experiences, and industry analysis.

As a musician myself, I have experienced first hand how difficult it can be to attract audiences to local gigs. In many cases, bands perform to very small crowds- even when the lineup is strong.

To explore this further, I spoke with musicians and promoters involved in the DIY music scene. One musician explained that touring and performing can be difficult to sustain financially once travel, accommodation and equipment costs are considered.

I also organised a small gig event as part of my research, This gave me valuable insight into the challenges of promoting an event, selling tickets, and creating a consistent lineup that appeals to audiences. It gave me some great key insights such as some people just find out about gigs too late or they aren't aware of them at all!

The Solution

This is when I came up with the idea of DTTC. It works as both a tickets platform and discovery tool for live music- users can brows upcoming gigs, receive recommendations based on their musical preferences, and get notifications when events near them become available for discounted prices.

A key feature of the platform is the dynamic ticketing system- when ticket sales begin to slow down, promoters can release a limited number of discounted tickets through DTTC. This allows venues to fill empty spaces while making events more affordable for audiences.

App Features

The platform also introduces a reward system, where users earn points for attending gigs. These points can be used for future discounts or merchandise, encouraging people to support more local events.

By combining affordable ticketing, event discovery and community engagement, DTTC aims to strengthen local music scenes and help grassroots venues remain sustainable.

Social Community Features: The platform also aims to strengthen local music communities with features such as connecting with friends, commenting on gig pages, relevant group chats & customisable profiles.

The 'Buddy Up' feature allows solo gig goers to connect to others, letting them chat to others going to the gigs and fill out them awkward solo seats in the middle of rows.

Smart notifications: Users receive notifications when gigs matching their preferences become available, or when new discounts are released for upcoming events. This helps users discover events they might otherwise miss.

Product Design

Branding and Identity

From the beginning of the project, creating a strong and recognisable brand identity was an important goal. DTTC needed to feel energetic, bold, and closely connected to the culture of live music and grassroots venues.

A bright yellow colour palette became the foundation of the identity, inspired by nostalgic music culture and the hacienda- it feels high energy and exciting.

I created branded merchandise such as shirts to increase awareness of the service and support community engagement.

By combining bold colours, simple iconography and music inspire visuals, the branding aims to create a memorable identity that resonates with music fans across the nation.

Product Design

The service was designed to function as both a website and a mobile application. I began the design process by analysing existing event platforms such as DICE and Spotify, identifying elements that worked well for event discovery and user engagement.

Initial wireframes were created to explore the structure of the homepage and event browsing experience. These early layouts helped define how information such as gig listings, genre filters, and ticket availability would be organised within the interface.

I wanted to create something simple, engaging & easy to navigate.

Reflection

Discoteque Ticketclub resulted in a complete concept for a social-value ticketing platform, including a brand identity, website prototype, mobile app designs, and promotional materials.

Through the project I developed skills across UX research, branding, and product design, while gaining insight from conversations with musicians and industry professionals that helped validate the idea.

If the project were to continue, the next step would be developing a fully functional backend system and conducting further user testing to refine the platform and support real ticket sales. I would love to make the concept into a start-up and partner with venues across the nation.
